What makes a porta potty wheelchair-accessible?

A wheelchair-accessible porta potty has a floor at ground level with no step, a door wide enough for a wheelchair, grab bars beside the seat and enough floor area for a 60-inch-diameter turning circle. Those features follow the layout described in the 2010 ADA Standards for toilet rooms.

Approximate figures for the unit class we stock. We call these units wheelchair-accessible; whether your event meets ADA rules also depends on the route, ground and placement.

How many accessible porta potties does an event need?

Under section 213.2 of the 2010 ADA Standards, at least 5 percent of the portable toilets in each cluster, and never fewer than 1, must be accessible. A cluster of 10 units needs 1 accessible unit; a cluster of 21 needs 2. Separate clusters each need their own.

Read the rule at ADA.gov: 2010 ADA Standards. This is general guidance, not legal advice; confirm with your venue or permit office.

Where should the accessible unit go?

Place the accessible unit on firm, level ground such as pavement, packed gravel or short dry grass, with a clear path from parking and seating. Soft lawn, gravel ruts and curbs make an accessible unit unusable, so we set it on the best surface on site.

  • No curb or step between the path and the door
  • About 5 feet of clear space in front of the door
  • Away from slopes, which tilt the floor
  • Near the main crowd, not behind the other units

Questions before you book

Why is the accessible unit priced differently?

The accessible unit is larger and heavier, and fewer of them exist, so it is priced above a standard unit. Typical 2026 event quotes run about $250 to $440 including delivery and pickup.

Is your accessible unit ADA-compliant?

Our accessible units are built around the ADA layout: ground-level floor, grab bars, wide door and a 60-inch turning space. Whether a site complies also depends on routes, ground and counts, so we describe the units as wheelchair-accessible.

Can I rent one accessible unit and one standard unit?

Mixed orders are common: one accessible and one standard covers a church picnic or family reunion of about 50 to 75 guests. Delivery is one charge for both.

Do accessible units have a sink?

Most accessible units carry hand sanitizer rather than a sink. Add a handwashing station beside it, with soap and running water, if food is served.

How far ahead should I book an accessible unit?

Book about 7 to 10 days ahead for weekend events, since the accessible fleet is smaller. We often have one for next-day weekday delivery.
